NCERT Syllabus for Class 8 Science (Chapter Wise)

Chapter 1 Crop Production and Management The chapter describes the agricultural practices, basic practices for the production of crops, preparing soil, sowing, addition of fertilisers and manures, irrigation process, weed protection, harvesting of crops, their storage and the food obtained from animals.
Chapter 2 Microorganisms: Friend and Foe The chapter explains about microorganisms, where they live, relation between them and us, harmful microorganisms, preservation of food, fixation of nitrogen and the nitrogen cycle.
Chapter 3 Synthetic Fibres and Plastic The chapter gives information about the synthetic fibres, their types, characteristics, about plastics and their types, characteristics of plastics and its effect on environment.
Chapter 4 Material: Metals and Non Metals The chapter mentions physical and chemical properties and uses of metals and non-metals.
Chapter 5 Coal and petroleum The chapter mentions about formation, uses and products obtained on heating coal, formation and refining of petroleum, about natural gas, and conservation of natural resources.
Chapter 6 Combustion and Flame The chapter gives in-depth knowledge of combustion, what steps can be taken to control fire, and types of combustion. We will learn about flame and its structure. This chapter also teaches about fuel, fuel efficiency, and how burning of fuel leads to harmful products.
Chapter 7 Conservation of Plants and Animals The chapter describes deforestation, its causes and consequences, the conservation of wildlife and forests, biosphere reserves, about the fauna and flora, endemic species, wildlife sanctuaries, national parks, concept of Red Data Book, phenomena of migration, process of recycling of paper and reforestation.
Chapter 8 Cell-Structure and Function The chapter provides information on the basic unit of life; cell. It elaborates on the structure of cells, its contents and their function. The chapter also sheds light on differences between animal and plant cells.
Chapter 9 Reproduction in Animals This chapter gives information on reproductive structures in animals and the mechanism of reproduction in animal. The chapter also contains information on fertilization, its types and means of asexual reproduction.
Chapter 10 Reaching the Age of Adolescence The chapter focuses on the meaning of adolescence and puberty. The subtopics highlight the features of adolesecnec, menstruation, development of secondary sexual characters and sex determination.
Chapter 11 Force and Pressure This chapter describes force as a push or pull, the importance of interaction for force, different conditions of more than one force acting on an object, effects of force like it changes the state of motion and shape of an object, types of contact and non-contact forces, meaning and formula of pressure, the pressure exerted by liquid and gases, and importance of atmospheric pressure.
Chapter 12 Friction This chapter describes the meaning and types of friction, the factors affecting friction,the advantages and disadvantages of friction, methods of increasing or reducing friction, and fluid friction.
Chapter 13 Sound This chapter describes how sound is produced by vibrating objects, different musical instruments and their vibrating parts that produce sound, how humans produce and hear a sound, the importance of a medium for sound to travel, features of vibrations, the difference between audible and inaudible sounds, noise and music, measures to control noise pollution and its ill-effects.
Chapter 14 Chemical effects of electric current In this chapter, we will learn about how liquids conduct electricity, chemical effects of electric current. We will also explore the concept of electroplating.
Chapter 15 Some natural phenomena The chapter mentions lightning, charging by rubbing, types of charges and their interaction. We will learn how the transfer of charge takes place and lightning. We will also learn about the safety measures to be followed during lightning and earthquakes.
Chapter 16 Light The chapter mentions what makes things visible, the laws of reflection, regular and diffused reflection, the formation of multiple images, the colour of sunlight and what it is made up of then we will learn about the components, function, and human eye diagram and how can we take care of them, We will also learn about how visually challenged people can read and write, and the braille system.
Chapter 17 Stars and the solar system In this chapter, we will learn about the moon, stars, constellations, solar system, and some other members of the solar system like asteroids, comets etc.
Chapter 18 Pollution of air and water This chapter focuses on air pollution, how air gets polluted. We will also explore and study the case study of Taj Mahal, about greenhouse effect and what can be done to reduce air pollution. It describes air pollution and water pollution taking examples in the form of case study, what is potable water and how is water purified ? and what steps can be taken to reduce it.
